Variety characteristics

It is getting its name from the town of Koroni in Messinia, Greece. The Koroneiki olive is considered ‘the queen of olives’, as well as being recognized globally as one of the highest quality varieties used for olive oil production. Estimations are that Koroneiki olives cover 50-60% of the surface in Greece.

The Koroneiki is a small elliptical-shaped olive, weighing an average of 0.3-2 grams and measuring just 12-15 millimetres in length. It is cultivated mainly in Peloponnese, Zakinthos, Córdoba and Jaén (where Reinos de Taifas is based). Koroneiki tree produces one of the highest fruit yields of all varieties, while the overall yield of oil is relatively low, but of exceptional quality and taste.

Maturation of the olive starts in early October and lasts until January. It is different each year, depending on the weather.The harvest of the olives is between December and February depending on when they reach their optimal point of maturity each year.
