Variety characteristics

Arbequina (pronounced as AR-BEH-KI-NA) is a small, symmetrical olive fruit and can be anywhere from pink to burnt orange to black. It weighs at an average of 1.9 g. Arbequina gets its name from the town of Arbeca in Lerida, Catalonia, Spain. Arbequina can be found mainly in Lerida, Tarragona, Córdoba and Jaén (where Reinos de Taifas is based).

While the olives have a low flesh-to-stone ratio, the trees yield abundant fruits, resulting in an oil yield of around 22-27% – one of the highest amongst the main cultivars of olive. Therefore, Arbequina has emerged as one of the prevailing global olive cultivars typically grown in high-intensity, high-density plantations.
